Democratic Mayors Association Statement on President Biden’s State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) President Mayor Levar Stoney released the following statement tonight in response to President Joe Biden’s second State of the Union Address:

“Tonight’s address confirmed that the state of our union is stronger and more resilient than ever before, due in large measure to the remarkable leadership of President Joe Biden and his administration. When he entered office two years ago, President Biden faced unprecedented challenges and promised to rebuild the backbone of the country – and he’s done just that.

Under his leadership, we have experienced historic job growth, falling inflation, higher wages, and record investments being made to ensure we build back better. This also includes passing historic legislation such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, which are helping local residents, businesses and economies recover from the pandemic and create lasting investments for communities which are too often left behind.

As Mayors, we applaud the President for his continued efforts to unite the country and lead bipartisan work that is expanding health care for veterans, tackling climate change, beating the opioid epidemic, addressing the mental health crisis, and ending cancer as we know it.

While we celebrate these many achievements, we know there is still much work to be done and that we must come together to finish the job. We must renew our commitment to combatting gun violence, leading police reform, and protecting reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ individuals. And protecting and strengthening voting rights. As the President reminded us this evening, our country is a story of progress and resilience, made possible by a strong democracy and when united as one, can deliver for ALL people.”
