Democratic Mayors Association Elects New Leadership

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego to serve a 2-year term as President

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democratic Mayors Association elected Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego as their new President, along with Vice Presidents Mayor Justin Bibb (Cleveland, OH), Mayor Levar Stoney (Richmond, VA),  Mayor Todd Gloria (San Diego, CA), and Mayor Paige Cognetti (Scranton, PA). Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway (Madison, WI) was elected as Treasurer, and Mayor Ron Nirenberg (San Antonio, TX) was elected as Secretary.

“As local elected officials, mayors need to deliver for our residents on a day-to-day basis. We must work together to solve the most impactful issues our residents face — from public safety and the affordable housing crisis, to sustainability and more. The Democratic Mayors Association has demonstrated a commitment to electing quality leaders across the country. I’m determined to grow our national presence as President of DMA and committed to show voters across the nation that Democratic mayors are highly effective in delivering for cities. I’m excited to take on this role, particularly as we head into a critical election cycle for races up and down the ballot. My heartfelt thanks to Mayor Levar Stoney for his work leading DMA. I’m looking forward to working with him and DMA’s leadership team as we build upon our successes over the coming election cycle,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.

“As my tenure as President of the Democratic Mayors Association comes to a close, I reflect on the incredible journey of the past two years. Together, we've mobilized Mayors on progressive issues, led impactful GOTV efforts, and celebrated historic election wins across the nation. As we approach a critical moment in our nation's democracy, I am proud to pass the torch to Mayor Kate Gallego. Her leadership will undoubtedly carry forward the momentum we've built,” said Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney.

“I’m honored to serve on the Democratic Mayors Association board. In Cleveland and Democrat-led cities across the nation, we have shown time and again that when extremists in Washington and our state government hold us back, we lead the charge with proactive, innovative progress for our residents – showing what government can and should look like. This year, we have the essential responsibility to reelect President Joe Biden – our most pro-cities president in recent memory - and achieve wins for Democrats up and down the ballot. I’m excited to hit the ground running and continue to build upon the historic accomplishments of the past two years,” said Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb.

“With core values that favor building the middle class and ensuring government helps solve problems, Democratic Mayors are on the ground working to increase housing affordability, enhance public safety, rebuild our infrastructure, and end homelessness,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “I’m honored to continue serving on the Democratic Mayors Association Board along with leaders committed to implementing a vision of prosperity and growth in America’s cities.”

“There is so much at stake in 2024 - for our cities, our country, and the American people. I’m excited to continue to serve with my fellow DMA members and work toward continued progress addressing economic inequality, housing affordability, and upholding our democratic institutions,” said Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti.

"Wisconsin will be a critical state in the 2024 election cycle. As a member of President Biden's National Advisory Board, I'm committed to mobilizing Democratic mayors across Wisconsin and across the country. Continuing on the DMA Board is a critical part of that work, and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to serve,” said Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway.

"I'm thrilled for the opportunity to represent Texas on the board of the Democratic Mayors Association as many states attempt to preempt local self-governance. Cities are the backbone of every state's identity and economy, and America's mayors are ready to fight for our residents' autonomy and voice. As we enter the election cycle, this is the year to show the nation that Democrats are leading thriving, vibrant communities,” said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg.

As Democratic Mayors Association President, Mayor Gallego will lead a network of more than 500 Democratic Mayors and put forth an agenda to improve the lives of all Americans by focusing on the most urgent challenges facing our country’s cities and towns, including housing, reproductive rights, climate change, gun violence, voting rights, education, economic inequality, infrastructure, and more. Mayor Gallego will serve a 2-year term as President, concluding in January 2026.
