New Mexico Sun: Mayor Hosts 4th Graders for Interactive Experience with City Departments

4th graders at Zia Elementary School were treated to an interactive field trip with the City of Albuquerque, hosted by Mayor Tim Keller at Civic Plaza on Thursday morning. The event aimed to provide students with a firsthand experience of how the city operates and the various departments within it.

Representatives from Albuquerque Police Department, Albuquerque Fire Rescue, Solid Waste Management, Sustainability, and the ABQ BioPark joined Mayor Keller to showcase their work and engage the students. The interactive sessions included demonstrations from three police cars, an AFR heavy rescue truck, a fire truck, and a Solid Waste collection truck, giving the students a unique insight into the daily activities of city employees.

In addition to the demonstrations, representatives from the ABQ BioPark brought artifacts for the students to interact with, while the Sustainability Office organized a hands-on game to educate the students about recycling and composting initiatives.

Mayor Tim Keller emphasized the importance of such educational initiatives, stating, “Events like today’s provide students a chance to have a personal experience with possible career paths in their future, and we are committed to helping students achieve their dreams right here in our hometown.”

City officials expressed their desire to continue hosting similar interactive experiences for students at the Civic Plaza in the future, with the aim of inspiring and educating the youth about potential career paths within the city government.
