PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — The Providence Police Department is launching a real-time crime center.

Similar systems are already used in other major cities across the country.

As part of the new system, the department is asking people to register their home and business cameras.

It's completely optional, but police said it could help solve crimes and keep the community safer.

The department said anyone who does register their security cameras will only be contacted if there is an incident close to the camera that requires further investigation.

Access also requires consent.

City leaders said the new Real Time Crime Center will consolidate intelligence, using 911 calls, license plate readers and security cameras.

It will also provide live situational awareness to officers in the field and help with coordinated responses to crimes.

"Safety in every neighborhood has been my top priority. This investment in the Providence’s Real Time Crime Center strengthens our ability to protect neighborhoods and improve quality of life for everyone in Providence,” said Mayor Brett Smiley.

“With access to real-time data and advanced technology, our officers can respond more quickly and effectively to incidents. This center will help reduce crime and strengthen our partnership with the community by enhancing transparency and building trust," Col. Oscar Perez said.

The new state-of-the-art operations center is funded by a $1 million federal earmark secured by U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.
