Democratic Mayors Association Statement on the 158th Juneteenth Anniversary

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democratic Mayors Association (DMA) President Mayor Levar M. Stoney issued the following statement in commemoration of the 158th Juneteenth anniversary:

“Today, Democratic Mayors celebrate the anniversary of Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery and the liberation of Black Americans across the country. The enduring legacy of Juneteenth marks a decisive chapter in our nation’s history and is a time to remember the relentless efforts of individuals who not only fought for freedom but worked to ensure it would one day come with justice and equality for all.

This Juneteenth, we shine a light on Black Americans’ unwavering resilience and fortitude while recognizing their contributions to our communities nationwide. We also reflect on the adversities that Black Americans, past and present, endured in the pursuit of true freedom and justice. As our nation continues to make great strides against racial inequities, much work remains to be done in the fight for sustained progress. Democratic Mayors reaffirm their commitment to centering equity at the heart of their work and dismantling the deep-rooted impacts of racial injustices on our cities.”
